How Much Time Does Someone have to Safely Get Away from a Home Fire?

2 Minutes is all a person has to safely get away from a home fire.  Having a smoke alarm helps prevent a home fire from happening.  Fire is the most common natural disaster.  Many home fires occur because there were no smoke alarms or fire safety devices like fire extinguishers or fire sprinklers,  The reasoning is that it won’t happen to them or they will smell or see it or hear  before it gets out of control.

Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, on each level of your home including the basement.  Smoke alarms should be mounted on the ceiling 4″ from the wall.  Wall mounts should be 4-12″ from the ceiling.

Since October 2015 landlords are required to have smoke alarms installed in their properties.  They need to be installed on every level of the property. In addition a carbon monoxide detector installed in any room containing a solid fuel burning appliance.

American Red Cross has  launched a campaign installing smoke alarms in 100 cities across the United States to reduce death and injuries caused by home fires by 25% over 5 years.  For more information on home fire safety and smoke alarm installation please visit Redcross.org/homefire.
